About Us

The New Crossroads was created by a team of colleagues at Public Employee Press, the publication of DC 37, AFSCME, which represents more than 100,000 municipal employees and 50,000 retirees in New York City. The blog’s perspective is pro-labor, but it does not reflect the official line of the union.

Sr. Associate Editor Gregory N. Heires worked with Photographer Clarence Elie-Rivera on an initial design of the blog that was refined and ultimately produced by Typesetter Michael Lee.

Heires, the site’s blogger, studied at William College, where he earned his degree in political science (with a focus on political philosophy) and also completed an area studies concentration in Latin America. He later attended the New School, where he completed his master’s degree in economics (with a focus on political economy).

Before joining Public Employee Press, Heires worked for the Waterbury Republican-American, one of the largest dailies in Connecticut; the Fairfield County News, a twice-weekly newspaper in Fairfield, Connecticut; and Latinamerican Press, a religious-based publication in Lima, Peru, dedicated to covering political, human rights, religious, economic and social issues in the region.

He is a past president of the NYC Metro Labor Communications Council, a professional association of media workers in New York. He has received several awards from Metro and its parent, the International Labor Communications Association.

Heires’ work has appeared in In These Times, The Greenwich News, Latin American Newsletter, The Lima Times, The Guardian, Inter Press Service, and UPI.
